Rule #1 - Integrity
If only it were that simple – begin with a list of ingredients, throw all those attributes into a big bowl, stir with a steady but firm hand, bake at a moderate temperature and with a little time and patience out pops the perfect employee.
If your workplace is known for its integrity, you will attract and retain like-minded individuals.
A reputation for integrity fosters trust and commitment. At Boost Juice, we hold a very high value system, which naturally encourages people to do the right thing. While maintaining integrity might sometimes incur short-term costs, it’s crucial to remember that financial losses are replaceable, but the loss of trust is not.
1. Keep Your Word: If circumstances force you to change your mind, be honest about why. Maintain humility and understand that sometimes you need to give more to earn the right to make changes.
2. Consistency: Ensure that your actions align with your words and private thoughts. People can see through lies; sincerity cannot be faked.
3. Surround Yourself with Integrity: Avoid working with individuals who have lower standards of integrity than you. Always aim to associate with people who uphold high standards.
4. Lead by Example: The integrity of a company stems from its leaders. Upholding integrity as a core value is essential for longterm success.
5. Value Integrity Over Profit: In situations where doing the honorable thing costs money, consider it a short-term loss for a long-term gain in trust and reputation.
My own experience of finding people with the right ingredients came early at Boost Juice. A young woman who was an Australian speed water skiing champion with no retail experience was the first person I hired. What I saw in this young lady was grit, honesty, and integrity. Although she had no retail experience, she had the right heart and soul for the business. If it weren’t for her integrity in those early days, Boost possibly would not exist today.
On the other hand, I have recently witnessed the cultural demise of a company that changed Managing Directors. The outgoing MD left due to a matter of principle, while the new MD lacks understanding of the word “integrity.” Consequently, the company is losing staff, and its profit is down by 23%. Integrity is a long-term profit driver.
“Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.” — C.S. Lewis
A commitment to integrity is essential for building trust, fostering a positive work environment, and ensuring long-term success. By upholding high standards of integrity, both leaders and employees contribute to a culture of honesty, reliability, and moral uprightness
